PFAS and their degradation in the environment
FPP4EU commissioned Ramboll to provide a review of the scientific literature on the environmental degradation of PFAS across 31 PFAS groups. The report identifies literature studying where and how degradation may occur in different environmental compartments, including air, water, soil and wastewater treatment systems. The identified literature highlights the diversity of PFAS chemistry and the complexity of environmental systems, showing that degradation behaviour varies widely between substances and conditions. While certain precursor compounds can undergo transformation, many PFAS are highly resistant to degradation under environmentally relevant conditions and may persist or form stable transformation products.
